How To Become A Millionaire Through Real Estate Investing
In this podcast, Avery from The Shortterm Show hosts Brian Luben from Action Academy. They discuss Brian’s journey from corporate America to building his career in sales, traveling through Europe, and how people often settle into a “good enough” mindset. Brian shares insights on breaking free from comfort zones and striving for more in both life and career.
Avery: Hey guys, welcome back to another episode of the Shortterm Show. Today we have a really cool guest you’ve probably seen him on Instagram or everywhere—I know I have! We have Brian Luben of Action Academy. Brian, how’s it going?
Brian: It’s going good, Avery. I’m so excited I’m coming on your show today, and you’re coming on mine tomorrow! So, we’re going to do a great two-for-one special. This is my first podcast episode—believe it or not—in over two months! We started our show in 2021, and it’s a daily show.
Avery: You’re a podcaster! How crazy is that? So you’ve done a podcast every day for almost three years, and for the first time, you took a break to travel in Europe.
Brian: Yeah! We’ll get into that in the podcast, how I actually took a vacation for the first time. And now, this is my first podcast back. So, just that story in and of itself is going to be cool for the audience, but I’m honored this is the first one back. Thank you so much, we’re honored to have you as well.
Avery: You’re right up the road from us where your vacation market is, right? You’re in Atlanta?
Brian: I was in Atlanta, but I’m in Austin, Texas now. That’s where home is. Most of my life was in Atlanta.
Avery: Gotcha! Did my time in Austin too, I went to UT. Perfect place, though I miss it sometimes.
Brian: I go back, and I’m like, “Oh man, y’all kind of ruined it.” But you know, that was 10 years ago that I lived there.
Avery: Anyway, let’s talk about you. We’re here to talk about you, Brian, for our listeners who may not be familiar with you. Give us a little bit of background on how you got out of your corporate job, and all that fun stuff. Sweet, yeah! Guys, buckle up for the next 45 minutes.
Brian: Yeah, I’ll talk about my childhood trauma, go through high school and college—I’ve got it down to about two minutes! We’re going to provide as much value as possible to every single one of you guys. So, five-star review for the Shortterm Show with Avery!
Avery: Yes! Let’s do it!
Brian: So, I did the pretty traditional thing. I started corporate America, heard about the salary thing. But then I realized if I’m better, I don’t get paid more, and that’s a trap a lot of people fall into. So, I wanted to be in this thing called commission. I went into sales, one of the few people that chose sales because I wanted that variable compensation. If I get better, I get paid more.
Avery: Makes sense!
Brian: And I did that. I made it to number eight out of 5,079 in that company—I was at the top of the company out of the entire country. I still keep my trophies and stuff to this day because it was the first time I did something really, really hard in my life that took multiple years.
Avery: That’s awesome!
Brian: A lot of people listening are in this zone of ‘good enough.’ They’re in this comfort zone where they’re like, “I’ll invest in real estate a little bit on the side. Maybe I’ll do a house every few years. I don’t need to take much action because life is good enough, marriage is good enough, health is good enough, everything is good enough.”
Avery: Exactly!
Brian: And this is the trap we all fall into. So, a frame I like to give people right out the gate is: value where you are. Look at your boss’s boss if today is good enough. Look at who that is, because that’s going to be you in 5 to 10 years.
