Blazing Your Own Trail with Tyann Marcink Hammond
Tyann, a 15-year veteran in the short-term rental industry, shares her journey of turning family investments into a massive rental empire. She started with a four-bedroom home and now manages close to 500 properties in Missouri, transforming communities along the way, including the small town of Marthasville.
Avery: Hey y’all, welcome back to the show! Today, we have a really interesting guest—Tyann Marcink Hammond, the queen of guest experience at Touchday. I also think you might have the longest tenure as a short-term rental host of anyone that we’ve had on the show so far, right?
Tyann: Thank you for the invite! Yeah, so I started 15 years ago—it was a family affair, actually. My aunt and uncle started first and bought the largest vacation rental in the Branson area. I’m in Missouri, and it was a four-bedroom, two-bath home, which was the largest available at the time. They moved all their personal furniture in, and a lot has changed since then, you know?
Avery: Wow, that sounds like quite the journey. What happened next?
Tyann: Well, about a decade ago, my parents decided, “Hey, this is a great thing,” so they started selling their commercial properties and bought two five-bedroom houses. You know how everyone has to one-up each other! laughs So I got in on it and built a four-bedroom house, one of twelve that could sleep 14 or more people.
Avery: And now you’re managing how many properties?
Tyann: Fast forward to today, and we’re talking close to 500 houses that can sleep 14 or more people. The growth in the area has been incredible! It started out as purpose-built homes, and we thought we’d have fun while making a little money. It was a higher-risk investment at that time in my life—I was only 27 with two little kids, just like you, Avery!
Avery: Oh, I can definitely relate to that! So what came next?
Tyann: Well, we built another house two years later. Then I went through a divorce, and with some equity burning a hole in my pocket, I bought a bank in Missouri wine country! Everyone thought I had lost it when I said I was going to rehab this bank into a four-bedroom vacation rental. But it worked, and now the town of Marthasville, Missouri—this tiny place with 1,100 people that got flooded out in 1993—has totally turned around. There’s been so much growth, and it’s now on the map.
Avery: That’s amazing. You really took something from the ground up.
Tyann: Yeah, and now I have four properties, plus I sold my first one last year. Missouri wine country is booming, and I’ve got two boutique brands of vacation rentals. The transformation has been something else!
