Patryk Swietek, a tech-oriented entrepreneur turned real estate investor, shares his journey from starting a game server company at age 14 to working with Avance Day, an Airbnb arbitrage company. He discusses his experiences in tech, entrepreneurship, and his love for Chicago, along with his preference for Chicago-style pizza over New York’s.

Avery: Hey y’all, welcome back to another episode of The Short Term Show. Today I have Patryk Swietek. He told me the correct way to pronounce his name, and it’s impossible, so we’re not going to pronounce it like that.

Patryk: I’m Patryk Swietek, a real estate investor, short-term shop client, and host of The Patryk Real Estate Show, and I will let him take it from here.

Avery: Patryk, do you want to tell us a little bit about yourself?

Patryk: Yeah, sure. So my background is very tech-oriented. I was starting companies since I was 14 years old, actually, so my first company was a game server company that I provided game service space across the world, basically, and made forty thousand dollars a year doing it. Not the traditional route for a high school student, but I was a failing high school student, so I didn’t really have good grades. And I thought that people really wanted to have somebody with real-world experience that provides real-world value. Colleges, newsflash, colleges don’t care about that, so there I was. I couldn’t really get into a college, but eventually, got good grades, got into a college, did that whole thing, was in tech for a while, started building a bunch of tech companies, raised Venture Capital, did that whole thing, and then didn’t really work out. It wasn’t as easy as I thought it was. Entrepreneurship is a lot harder, as you know, Avery, and yeah.

Patryk: Eventually, I moved to LA, and I started for Avance Day, and that was Avanti’s, uh, Airbnb Arbitrage company. They had around 200 units. I helped them scale to a thousand-plus with, I was a product manager there, so definitely touched every part of the business, and that’s really where I fell in love with short-term rentals.

Avery: I didn’t know that you worked for Avance Day. That’s interesting. So where did you grow up? I thought you grew up in LA.

Patryk: No, I didn’t. I’m not an LA boy. I’m Chicago-born and raised.

Avery: I love Chicago so much. Yeah, Midwesterners, so we got to represent. I am married to a Midwesterner, so you guys certainly represent.

Patryk: But I do, I do love going to Chicago. It’s like, uh, Chicagoans are gonna hate me for saying this, but it’s like a cleaner, more easy-to-deal-with New York.

Patryk: And better pizza, don’t forget about that.

Avery: Oh yeah, I do. I do think that. I prefer Chicago pizza to New York pizza.

Patryk: No, that is a very controversial thing to say,

Avery: Patryk. I think you just lost my New York card right there.

Patryk: Yeah, you just lost all your New York followers there. You got it. It just drops.

Avery: Yeah, I just like the deep dish better.

Patryk: Yeah, I agree, and I will be on the same boat as you. The food in Chicago is unparalleled, and I will always say this forever, that Chicago in the summer is the best city, but nine months of the year, it’s not summer, so nine months of the year, it’s a living hell.

Avery: And I don’t like to be cold, so… I think I’ve only been in the summertime, so maybe that’s why I like it so much.

Avery: Yeah, exactly. You know, that’s usually what it is.

Avery: Okay, awesome. So I want to hear about working for Avance Day because it’s really interesting to me when someone…
