Unlock STR Success: The Six-Minute Money Machine with Philip Kennard

Philip Canard, the founder of Future Stay, a cool property management operating system, is excited to share updates on how things are going. Avery, the host, welcomes him to the show. Avery mentions listening to every episode of the podcast over the past week and a half, making Philip their morning commute partner. Philip expresses gratitude for being a guest and hopes he hasn’t been boring. He shares that he’s excited and ready to discuss his experiences.

Avery: I went over there, and there was a girl who was renting it. She was from Europe, and I’m like, “Man, you have no idea. Whoa, all these boys are in this house, and you are renting the couch in the kitchen that’s out in front of everybody?

Yeah, that was a little too much for me. Classic early days, uh, vacation rental short-term rental experience, like you know?

Philip: I know, right? Like I had a studio in Greenwich Village. It was a big studio, but it was still just a studio. Right, it wasn’t like a loft. That’s what they told me—it was really “studio,” but you could rent anything! At that point in time, I was renting it out as a two-bedroom. We just put up fake walls, and you just rented it out! Yeah, and you could make—what? Instead of making, you know, $200 a night, you could make $600 a night, right? Or $500 a night because people would just cram in, and so that helped me really make ends meet. The tough part for me…

And I think probably, like, you know, for a lot of people at that point in time, and still today, it’s like learning. What those tips and tricks are. That’s not a trick you should do anymore, right? That’s not a good plan, but like what, what… The current tips and tricks are like, what are the right ways to make it successful in STR, STR. And I think you… Know we learn, like, you and I probably learned a lot of these, like, the hard way, right? By kind of being some of the first…

People to do it. But now, you know, your audience, uh, my audience gets to learn from us—like, from our mistakes.

Right, from the best practices that, like, we as an industry have developed over the past. I don’t know, I mean, let’s go…
